Help Paula Forget with Stem Cell Transplant

Donation protected
Thank you for your interest in my dear friend, Paula Forget’s GoFundMe (Fund Raising) initiative. If you do not know Paula, I will begin by saying that she is the most honest and humble person you could meet. Paula is my mentor and good friend. She is battling with a difficult form of cancer and can benefit from support at this time. Cancer is terrible. Cancer treatment can be brutal. Paying for cancer treatment can be unaffordable.

If you are able to assist Paula financially, great! If you are not, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers, as all forms of assistance are powerful and will be most sincerely appreciated as she heads into the next chapter of her battle with cancer.

“I know you care about me because here you are, and that lifts my spirit ♡! My love goes out to you and also to every cancer patient and their families.”
- Paula Forget

A bit about Paula…
Paula is a 72 year old, independent working woman. She is an author, an artist, and a meditation teacher. Currently, Paula works, part time, as an event coordinator and volunteer manager for a non-profit organization in Bellingham, WA, the Tree of Life Sanctuary. Asking for help is not easy for Paula.

Paula has an aggressive form of Multiple Myeloma, a disease in which cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out the healthy blood cells. She has undergone chemotherapy for several months and has had a very good response so far. She's now been given the green light to have an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant in Seattle. This is going to be a long and arduous procedure. Stem cells will be harvested from her bone marrow and stored. Then she will receive high levels of chemotherapy and radiation to kill all the cancer cells. This process will completely eliminate her immune system. After that, the harvested stem cells will be reintroduced into her bone marrow. Then the long journey to a normal immune system will begin. This will include getting all of her childhood vaccines, taking good care of herself and waiting for her body to bounce back. Essentially, she will be starting from zero and rebuilding. (We know some survivors who have been successful in getting their cancer into a state of remission after going through this program at Fred Hutchinson’s Cancer Center. This organization is leading the research and this very specialized treatment of this form of cancer.)

The reason for this GoFundMe request…
Paula will be required to stay in Seattle for three+ months to be close to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center while she gets the treatment she needs. She is working to gather a small team of Caregivers that are going to take turns as her caregivers while she’s there. This procedure can not happen if Paula does not have caregivers during and for one month after her stem cell transplant! (While Paula has many good friends, she does not have family close at hand with her remaining family living in Canada.) With the exception of her caregivers, Paula will be in complete isolation. Keeping her free from germs and infection will be the number one priority after her procedure in Seattle.

Paula's transplant and recovery are going to have a huge financial impact. There are a number of expenses that won’t be covered by insurance. We’re learning as we go through this process that it isn’t as straightforward as we had expected. Some of the things that aren’t covered by her insurance are lodging and living expenses, her caregivers in Seattle for the first 5-6 weeks, certain medications and supplements, as well as some medical appointments. This whole cancer journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions for Paula, to say the least. Paula is in the title fight of her life and she is giving it her all.

It’s not easy asking for help, but we thought we would put this campaign together to defray expenses for Paula to take some of the financial pressure off her while she goes through this procedure and into her recovery. Her 3 month treatment in Seattle begins in January, if she can raise money for her stay and her caregivers!

You can send your love and support to this delightful and deserving soul by donating to this GoFundMe in her name. Paula has been a wonderful friend to everyone she meets, always there with a genuine smile, a kind word, and often a helping hand. Now she needs your help.

We'll update this page with Paula's progress and keep everyone in the loop on her recovery. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to reach out to her friend, John Mason.
Thank you for time and your consideration.

AND, if appropriate, please share this request to your network to help get the word out regarding this GoFundMe page. Thank You!

Where the fund raising money will go…

Travel and food expenses. ???
Medications and additional non-covered expenses ???
Some assistance with daily expenses when she returns to Bellingham without being able to work due general health and isolation from infections while her immune system recovers ???
Total possible costs: $60,000 until she can return to work and her normal life.
