Paula is a legal advocate living in New York City, and an incoming student at CUNY Law. Originally from Chile, Paula has been working in the immigration field since 2014. Still without a permanent status in the U.S., the topic of immigration is a personal one for Paula.
Paula has worked as a Fellow at the Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, as an intern at the Dilley Pro Bono Project, and currently as a manager at the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP). In 2018 Paula was a recipient of the Liman Undergraduate Public Interest Fellowship at Yale Law, and in 2020 was awarded the Yat K. Tow Prize at Brown University. Paula was able to complete her undergraduate studies at Brown University through a full, need-based scholarship.
Now, Paula is seeking assistance to cover the costs for her spring and summer semesters at CUNY. As someone without permanent residence, Paula does not qualify for federal aid or loans. She plans to attend CUNY as a part time student, while continuing to work full time at IRAP to cover tuition and other expenses. Still, there is a gap in funding of $9,728 . The breakdown of this amount is:
Spring semester part time enrolment: $5,478.95
Summer semester part time enrolment: $4,249.05
Please consider donating to help Paula cover these last costs and become an attorney! In Paula's words:
New York is the first place that I felt at home as an immigrant in this country, and I would like my legal practice to be embedded in the realities and needs of immigrant communities here. I want to attend CUNY law and become a lawyer in New York not because I believe that the law is a fair blanket of opportunity and equal justice for all, but because I have seen for myself that it is a tool that is so often being used against our communities, and a tool that I believe can be reclaimed in the favor of our ideals.
This fundraiser is organized by Miranda, a long time friend of Paula's. All funds will go directly to Paula.
