Help Paul while he recovers from his 27th surgery
Donation protected
Paul is one of the most amazing people I have ever met, he has such a zest for life. He is kind, generous, loving and is always willing to help someone in need. Even if it’s just an ear to listen he is always there and willing to help. He has spent his life helping others and asking nothing for himself but now he needs help.
On January 22, 2019 Paul had his 27th surgery. Born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, he has developed additional medical conditions over the years. This most current surgery was designed to decrease pressure on his spinal cord which was limiting his ability to function without extreme pain.
Over the years, Paul has had orthopedic surgeries on his spine, ankles, hips as well as receiving muscle transplants. He has also had multiple brain surgeries as well as other surgeries to address a host of issues related to Spina Bifida.
Having earned two Master’s degrees, Paul is a Mental Health Clinician for the State of Nevada. Due to this current surgery and recovery, Paul is unable to work for a minimum of three months. Full recovery could take up to two years. During this period Paul is accumulating tremendous amounts of expenses from medical and household bills.
He has worked full time in various social services fields for over the last twenty years as a Head Start teacher, residential counselor, mental health counselor, therapist, and advocate for at risk populations and life coach for children and families.
Prior to his surgery, he was walking with the aid of full leg braces and crutches. He has also used a walker and wheelchair in the past as well as other assistive devices to address Scoliosis, Cervical Spinal Stenosis and Degenerative Disk Disease.
He applied for Catastrophic Leave Benefits from his work but as of yet he has not been approved. If approved, Catastrophic Leave depends on receiving donated sick time hours from co-workers. He has currently exhausted all of his personal, holiday and sick time which also results in him being 100% financially responsible for his health insurance premium of close to $900 a month in addition to all his other medical and living expenses. He has no other means of income.
He has never received, nor asked for, financial assistance for his medical expenses. Once recovered, he plans on resuming work as a Mental Health Clinician and Life Coach for children and families.
