Hello everyone.
My name is Danielle Wright, and I am the Chairman of the Board for the Katy Economic Development Council.
On Behalf of our Katy EDC and the Texas Christian Chamber we are asking for your help in raising funds to get our brother in Christ Paul Kurt home and the medical attention he is so desperately needing here in Houston.
On December 29, 2025, which was his 68th birthday, Paul Kurt suffered a hypotensive event while skiing with his son, Michael, in Steamboat. The hypotensive event caused multiple small, pinpoint strokes, which caused him to go unconscious while upright in his skis. Paul continued to gain momentum until eventually crashing at a high speed, unable to brace himself upon impact. By the grace of God, Paul narrowly missed colliding directly into a light pole. When Michael got to him, he pulled Paul’s face out of the snow, and he thought his dad was gone. Paul’s eyes were glazed over, he wasn’t breathing, and he was unresponsive. Michael started pleading with God to keep his father alive, he screamed for help, and he started CPR in an attempt to bring Paul back. Steamboat ski patrol arrived promptly, took over CPR, and was able to quickly find his pulse and restart his breathing before needing to use a defibrillator. They skied Paul down the run to an ambulance, immediately took him to Emergency Care at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, and then quickly flew him by life flight to St. Mary’s Regional Hospital in Grand Junction, CO, where he has been intubated in the ICU for the last 20+ days.
As a result of the collision, Paul suffered a grade 1 traumatic brain injury with diffuse axonal shearing, a fractured scapula and two fractured ribs, and aspiration pneumonia. He also fought through a kidney infection. Paul has been a warrior through it all, and with your prayer, love, and support, he has been hitting the milestones we have been hoping for that give us reason to believe he has a good prognosis. With that said, we will not know for sure until we start to see consistent wakefulness and command-following over the coming days and weeks. His recovery process has already been a roller coaster with highs and lows, and we expect that it will take weeks to months for him to fully recover. Our Lord has made Himself present through many Godwink moments so far, especially through Virgin Mary. Paul was unable to be flown to Denver on the night of the incident due to weather, which is how he ended up at St. Mary’s, a Catholic hospital. He also first demonstrated higher neurological capacity on New Year’s Day, the Solemnity of Mary, and the Kurt family has been attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church while in Grand Junction.
Paul, and his wife, Karen, have been steadfast and selfless leaders in the Katy/West Houston community for 30+ years. Among his most notable service to our community, Paul currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Texas Christian Chamber of Commerce, and he was Chairman of the Katy Area Economic Development Council from 2022-2025, President of the Rotary Club of Katy in 2020-2021, Chairman of the Katy Triathlon from 2019-present, and Chairman of the Board of the Katy Chamber of Commerce in 1999-2000. He has also served many through his firm, Kurt & Associates, P.C.
Our prayer for Paul is a complete recovery. This process will be a long journey, likely weeks to months, requiring considerable patience and resources. Paul will likely be flown to Houston within the next week via a $30k air ambulance, where he can recover closer to home, closer to family, closer to this community. Many of you have asked how you can help Paul, Karen, and the Kurt family at this time. We have launched this GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for Paul’s medical expenses, family expenses related to his recovery, and to support Kurt & Associates until Paul is back in the saddle, hopefully before the end of this tax season. Kurt & Associates will be short on bandwidth for the foreseeable future and will need some grace from clients as they are able to offer it. Paul and Karen’s children have stepped in to financially support the firm in the interim to the best of their ability, but they will need our help as Paul’s recovery requires more time. Please join us in supporting the Kurt family in this time of need, and may God Bless you.
