Help Paul Auger Walk. No RUN!

At age 63, my father, besides the annual cold or pinched nerve in his back from being on his feet for 11 hours a day as a mechanic, is healthy as a horse.  So, when I recieved a call from him on Monday, January 16, asking if I could come and help him get my nephew (who is 1 year old) into the house because he was having troubles, I assumed it was because his back was out.

My brother in law Chad came home to my father propped up on the island by his arms and sitting on his knees.  My dad assumed his loss of feeling in his legs was his back since he was just at the chiropractor the day prior.  He had decided he better just spend the night on Chad and Lindsay's (his youngest daughter) living room floor instead of driving home.  Around 4am Tuesday, January 17, Lindsay heard dad yelling for her from downstairs.  When she got to him he had lost all feeling in his arms and legs.  He had rolled over and was unable to move.  He was nervous since he was having a hard time breathing and unable to clear his throat.  At this point he couldn't even sit up.  He was paralyzed from the shoulders down, unable to  move and having difficulty breathing.  Lindsay called the ambulance and off they went to St. John's.  Mom met them at the hospital where they ran a battery of tests.  After ruling everything else out he has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome.  Guillain-Barre syndrom is a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves.

Dad is completly paralyzed from the neck down.  He has a trach tube and is hooked up to the ventilator that breathes for him.  He has a feeding tube in his stomach, catheter to empty his bladder, a port in his carotid artery, and an IV.

Dad has had 3 doses of Immunoglobulin Therapy and his 2nd of 5 doses of Plasmapheresis.  He is on day 7 as I write this and there is no improvement at all.  In fact, as of yesterday morning (Sunday, January 22) he could no longer shrug his shoulders.

You see, my father has worked as a mechanic for his family business since he was 16.  He works 5 days a week 11 hours/day.  He is the only income earner in the family.  His job is not only physical but demanding.   We know that his return to work will be many months out and the doctor indicated possibly up to a year for him to regain the skills necessary for his job.

It is never easy to ask for help and especially financial help.  That is why I am doing this on behalf of my father and mother.  I know with the ICU stay, 24 hour inpatient care at the rehabilitation center (that he will be moved to after ICU), and ongoing therapy, the financial burden on my parents will be tremendous.  With my father's lost wages, their typical monthly expenses,  coupled with the added medical expenses, they will most certainly struggle.

I've set up this GoFundMe to help offset the cost of Paul's medical bills and loss of income as a result of his illness.  Any amount you can give is much appreciated!  Please share his page and keep praying for his recovery!  God Bless
