Paty Conde is one of the oldest trans people in El Salvador. Her story has been used by many to tell the history of El Salvador's LGBTI community, but despite her long contributions to this history, she lives in precarious poverty and struggles to make ends meet. Some of you have generously donated in the past to help get Paty a proper roof over her head, to help her see an eye doctor, and to get dentures. Now, Paty is in an extremely precarious living situation and needs to find new housing as soon as possible.

Due to extreme anti-LGBT rhetoric in El Salvador (as in the US), as well as the closure of USAID and the new 30% tax on NGO funds under Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's government, any organization or institutional help for Paty has ended. Her only support is through donations and the daily, challenging caretaking work of her long-term community of fellow trans women in El Salvador.

I've put together this GoFundMe because I don't see any other options. The cost of living has risen significantly in El Salvador and Paty's new rent is now three times as high as it was before. I am not able to support this cost alone, so I'm reaching out to my network for help.

I hate to put the burden on Paty to justify or reveal the extent of her hardship in order to fund money, but I also know that's the reality we live in. Due to the extra financial and other stress associated with her living conditions, she is experiencing dire health concerns. It's urgent that she get out of this living situation immediately.

My dream here is to provide her with a cushion enough to not worry about rent or food for a whole year. Additionally, as Paty ages and experiences more health concerns, her caretakers also take on burdens that are emotionally and financially consuming and take time away from their own lives and jobs in order to care for her. I would love to also provide them with the support that they need to continue to care for Paty. That being said, any amount helps. The average daily wage in El Salvador is just over $5 per day, so if you can provide any amount, it will surely help Paty and her caretakers.
