On Wednesday, September 23rd, our family’s world changed in an instant.
Our mom, Patty, suffered a massive stroke that severely damaged the right side of her brain. The stroke left the entire left side of her body unusable, and she has lost the ability to walk by herself. What was once a normal, very independent life has suddenly become a long road of rehabilitation, medical care, and major changes to the place she calls home.
My sister, Megan, and I are doing everything we can to be there for our mom and give her the best chance at recovery. While we know that her life may look very different moving forward, we are not giving up on her.
Patty will need extensive rehabilitation and long-term care to help her regain as much strength, mobility, and independence as possible. Our hope is to get her into a long-term rehabilitation facility where she can receive the specialized care and the physical therapy she needs. Our ultimate goal is to help her recover enough to come home.
But getting Patty home will require significant changes to her house.
Her home will need to be remodeled to make it safe and accessible for someone who uses a wheelchair and has limited mobility. This may include accessibility modifications such as ramps, bathroom renovations, doorways, flooring, mobility equipment, and other changes necessary for her to safely move around and live as independently as possible.
The financial burden of a stroke like this is overwhelming. Between rehabilitation, long-term care, medical expenses, equipment, transportation, and making her home handicap-accessible, the costs are far beyond what our family can manage on our own.
That is why we are asking for your help.
Every donation, no matter the amount, will go toward helping Patty receive the care and rehabilitation she needs now and preparing her home for the day she can return.
If you are unable to donate, sharing Patty’s story means just as much to us. Every share helps us reach another person who may be able to help our mom on this incredibly difficult journey.
Our mom has always been so much more than a diagnosis. She is a mother, a sister, a friend, and someone who means the world to the people who love her. We want to give her every opportunity to fight, heal, and regain as much of her independence as possible.
Thank you for loving Patty, supporting our family, and helping us bring our mom home. ❤️
With love and gratitude,
Ashley & Megan
