Patty, and her beloved fur baby, Oliver, recently experienced a devastating flood that displaced them from their townhome in Carrboro, North Carolina on July 6, 2025.

The night of Tropical Storm Chantal, Patty and Oliver got concerned when the water started rising too quickly. They alerted neighbors and evacuated to higher ground before their street flooded. Within 20 minutes the water was up to the neighbors’ car hoods. Within 45 minutes it was up to the doorknobs. Twenty-eight homes were impacted. No one was hurt but everyone has been displaced.

The cost of cleanup is growing, as is the cost for temporary housing while they rebuild. No one had flood insurance and federal aid has been blocked or slow to start. Recovery and rebuilding will take 2-3 months.

A lifelong educator, Patty has spent the bulk of her career advocating for students, supporting early childhood and adult literacy, skill development for neurodivergent young adults, and connecting her community to resources and social supports.

Not to be outdone, Oliver, is an ATD Certified Therapy Dog who volunteers his time bringing comfort and joy to those in need of a little extra sunshine.

Both Patty and Oliver are constantly giving of themselves to others and now is a chance for those of us who have been impacted by their kindness to rally in support as they begin to rebuild. Any contribution, big or small, will make a significant difference in helping them recover from this devastating flood.
