Dear Everyone,
In 2008 I went to the doctor to find out why my foot was dropping when I went for a brisk walk. I also wanted to know why my left hand and arm started curling when I would run up the stairs. After I explained these two symptoms to the doctor his reply was that the problem was in my head. I told him, jokingly, I didn’t need a doctor to tell me I had head problems! He sent me for an MRI immediately that Friday.
That Monday morning, my GP shared with me that I may have Multiple Sclerosis. A chronic nervous system condition that weakens my ability to move safely and effects my cognition.
There was so much more to this diagnosis. I was scared, I felt ill-informed and completely in the dark about what could, would and had already happened to my body.
What I’d like you to know is that recently I’ve been connected with the The Freedom To Walk Foundation who has offered to sponsor my efforts to buy a WalkAide – a device that could change the course of my life!
The WalkAide is a revolutionary rehabilitation device which alleviates the complications of footdrop, (the paralysis of my ankle that causes me to trip unless I wear a brace). The small cuff would sit below my knee and sends electrical impulses down my leg to lift my ankle while walking – teaching my brain to walk safely again with every step I take! https://acplus.com/walkaide/
What this means for someone like me is more independence than I ever thought possible. It means I no longer would have to take extra time to put on a clunky leg brace and trying to fit a shoe over it every time I want to stand up and walk a few steps. My MS has limited my mobility. I miss being able to run, exercise, walk safely in high heels, and rollerskate. I miss walking without tripping or losing my balance and slamming into walls. I love dancing. The WalkAide would make mobility safe for me again.
Unfortunately, I have learned that the WalkAide will not be covered by my insurance. The current out of pocket cost is $3050. I am asking humbly for any help you might be able to give to help me purchase this amazing device.
Please feel free to ask me questions about my diagnosis. I don’t know everything about MS but I DO know its different for every individual who suffers from this chronic disease. In Jesus’ name, I know I will survive the losses and changes I have and continue to experience with my diagnosis.
Thank you for caring about me. Thank you for listening and praying for me. Your time, attention and love comforts me and I will forever be thankful.
In His love,
-Patches Hayter
