My name is Meredith, & my sister & I are asking for your help. Our mom, Leya, suffered a stroke the doctor called 'significant' on August 29, 2023, while driving their semi down Interstate 5 in Southern California. Blood clots had made their way to my moms brain, & as we talked on the phone, our conversation went from an everyday one.. to a life shattering one. Her speech became slurred, she was mumbling so bad she became incoherent, but she kept insisting she was fine & nothing was wrong. My dad looked over & realized something was wrong, she was having some sort of a medical episode so he pulled over & called the ambulance. The panic & fear in his voice is something I'll never forget.
Mom was rushed into surgery not even an hour after our call, my dad & I waited for the news. Not even 2 hours later, her doctor came in and said the words we all dread hearing, "we did the best we could." He explained he removed most of the blood clots, but if he kept going, it could cause further damage. He told us her left side would likely be paralyzed for the rest of her life, & the rest was unknown until she woke up. We have now sat in this waiting room through 3 surgeries in 72 hours. We celebrate a win, then we get hit with, "there's another clot near the scalp, we're going back in." So then we're back into a spiral of anxiety.
This also hurts my dad when it comes to their living conditions. Our parents have made a living the past 30 years by driving a semi truck all over the U.S., & they love it. They live full time in the truck though, it is their living room, kitchen, bedroom & bathroom. They have no real home, no real couch, & no real space for my mom to recover. This stroke not only put my mom out of work possibly forever, but our dad as well. He is now looking at financials & his head is spinning. How can he pay for all of this, AND be with her, & make sure she's staying strong & she's cared for? It must feel so heavy.
We are asking for anything you are willing to give, $1 $5 $20. Anything will help us find the best care, equipment, & therapy that she will need on this long road ahead. Our parents are the most incredible, fun loving people, & had obviously not planned financially for a life shattering stroke. So, anything you can spare, even if it's just prayers & sharing this link. We are so grateful, thank you.
