IMAPA US-CA is an abbreviation of "Ikatan Mahasiswa Papua," which translates to "Papuan Students Association'' in the USA and Canada. We are a humanitarian organization that aims to unite all Papuan students currently studying from high school to university in the United States and Canada. Our organization was created in 2017 by Billy Bonay and some Papuan brothers and sisters who were studying in America. In the United States and Canada, the Papuan Province government had been sponsoring approximately over 250 Papuan students granted by the Special Autonomy funds from the Indonesian government. This study-abroad program has been going on for over 14 years. Recently there had been a few changes in the Special Autonomy from the Indonesian government towards the Papua province that caused the cut or reduction in the education sector. Supported by this point, the Papua Province government planned to send home approximately 35 students, reasoning that the students could not graduate in time. However, these 35 students have just up to three semesters left to complete their studies. Moreover, the Papua provincial government no longer had funds to sponsor the Papuan students overseas. As a result, more and more Papuan students are left hanging without any sponsors by the Papuan government. Consequently, almost all Papuan students have not received allowances, tuition bills, and living cost arrangements for the past few months. The Papuan Students Association, IMAPA US-CA, is conducting the fundraising to accommodate the needs of our brothers and sisters.
