Papa Dudley is in the fight of his life! In 2020, he developed a softball-sized tumor diagnosed as stage 4 melanoma that metastasized to his lungs, liver, and bones. He's determined to beat it and he needs your help!
A little about Papa Dudley - when he sneezes, snores, and laughs, houses shake in the next state over. He loves his family, the Lord, and his neighbor; he'd do anything to help any of them in need. Truly, his laughter is the jolliest sound that has ever been heard on the planet and with all he's endured, his contagious joy is just part of what makes him miraculous.
Born with a hole in his heart, he had heart surgery at 4 years old, then experimental surgery at 16 to put in a Teflon patch. He had to have a pacemaker put in when he experienced tachycardia in 2005, but his heart surgeon said Papa Dudley's heart probably looked healthier than his own. He's a miracle, he's beaten all these things, and cancer will NOT beat him!
Immunotherapy to shrink the tumor began right away, aiming to remove it with as little damage to surrounding tissue as possible. It's working, but slowly, and the physicians have added targeted radiation to his therapy. We are so grateful for the progress, but it's not without a physical, emotional, and financial cost.
Medical debt is sadly a natural consequence of these struggles. The hospital is often asking for payment before they will do treatment, and side effects cause other costs to rise, like the $50-75 every week in specialty bandaging materials to deal with the bleeding, dying tumor. Side effects also create medical costs outside of treatment. Two days before Christmas they couldn't stop the bleeding and had to call an ambulance; the paramedics couldn't stop it either, and had to take him to the hospital. He is also having to have his pacemaker monitored weekly to make sure the radiation isn't killing the battery.
