Hi, my name is Aspen. I currently live in the Philippines with my wife and family... and my family needs your help:
Over the past few months, my father, Paolo, has been plagued by severe brain damage due to Acute Bacterial Meningitis. Against all odds, he has survived it; but the meningitis has affected his frontal lobe, impacting his cognitive abilities. This has also necessitated a shunt on his brain to his stomach due to hydrocephalus.
He is currently undergoing a recovery stage in the United States, while my mom is working as a special education teacher. They have been assisted by the wonderful people at Kaiser Permanente Hospital.
As he heals and recovers, however, my mother is in need of help. Although our medical case was covered for the hospital bills, we cannot cover the therapy and caregiver payments required while my father is recovering. I also used up the majority of my funds in order to acquire a visa and assist my parents as much as I can.
Since my mother is the only one who can assist with daily expenses in the U.S. now, and I am supporting a family in the Philippines, we had thought of hiring a caregiver while my mother works in another city to teach children with special needs. This way, my father would have someone who can provide care for him while all expenses, work, and medicines are being provided by us, the family.
With this laid out, we had estimated a year's worth of therapy and care outside the post-discharge to be nearly 50,000 USD.
This was calculated as such:
- Average outpatient caregiver (weekdays only), costing about $20/hr, which is needed for 8.5 hours a day while my mother works and commutes back home. The doctors estimate he will be needing them for about a year.
- Outpatient therapy ($40/session), needing about 3 therapies: (a) Occupational Therapy, (b) Speech Therapy, and (c) Physical Therapy. In terms of how long this is needed, we currently do not know yet.
- Potential medicine required and CT scans.
- Walker
Any form of help, big or small, would be of great help for my dad to recover.
