Help Paolo Get Top Surgery!

Dear community, I am Paulo Rodrigo Romo, trans man, Mexican with a Brazilian twist, biologist, paleontologist, and activist for the human rights of trans people, in particular trans and trans-masculine men. I’ve carried out grassroots work with the trans community and dialogued with institutions in Porto Alegre (RS), Brazil, and in México City, Mexico.

 

I am currently unemployed, and I have been trying to save money for my top surgery in the private health system for 9 years, but I have not succeeded, for various reasons. Among which is not yet having a job in my area, or a job with benefits. In addition, in Mexico, there are still no public policies to access this type of surgery through the public health system, despite the amount of evidence pointing to the health benefits this surgery brings to transmasculine people.

 

Another factor that complicates the performance of this surgery is that many doctors continue to be pathologizing and imposing cisheteronormative notions on our bodies. I found a doctor in my country, who is not pathologizing or heterocisnormative, however, he lives in another state, which increases the costs to perform my surgery a bit. In addition, this doctor is very empathetic with the trans community.

 

Faced with the frustration of watching the years go by and not being able to access this process that will make me feel more comfortable and free with my body and live a fuller life, I have decided to raise funds for this surgery with this doctor. The money raised will be to cover pre-operative studies, surgery (hospital and fees), post-operative medicines, transportation to the state where the surgery will be performed and two subsequent reviews, lodging, transportation and food in the state where the doctor resides, as well as other costs related to postoperative care.

 

The estimated amount to cover these expenses is $3,355. I thank you all in advance, and I invite that if you cannot donate, at least share my story around to help me reach my goal.

Querida comunidad, soy Paulo Rodrigo Romo, hombre trans, mexicano abrasilerado, biólogo, paleontólogo, y activista por los derechos humanos de las personas trans, en particular hombres trans y transmasculinos. He realizado trabajo de base con la comunidad trans y dialogado con instituciones en Porto Alegre (RS), Brasil, y en la CDMX, México.

 

Actualmente me encuentro desempleado, y llevo 9 años intentando ahorrar el dinero para mi mastectomía en el sistema privado de salud, no lo he conseguido, por diversos motivos. Entre las cuales está el aún no contar con un trabajo en mi área, o algún trabajo con prestaciones. Además, en México, aún no existen políticas públicas para acceder a este tipo de cirugías por medio del sistema de salud pública. A pesar de la cantidad de evidencia que señala los beneficios para la salud que esta cirugía trae para las personas transmasculinas. Otro factor que complica la realización de esta cirugía es que muchos médicos continúan siendo patologizantes e imponiendo nociones cisheteronormativas sobre nuestros cuerpos.

Encontre un médico en mi país, que no es patologizante ni heterocinormativo, sin embargo, radica en otro Estado, lo cual eleva un poco los gastos para realizar mi cirugía. Además este médico es muy empático con la comunidad trans.

 

Ante la frustración de ver pasar los años y no poder acceder a este proceso que me hará sentirme más cómodo y libre con mi cuerpo y vivir una vida más plena he decidido recaudar fondos para dicha cirugía con este médico.

 

El dinero recaudado será para cubrir estudios pre-operatorios, la cirugía (hospital y honorarios), medicinas post operatorias, transporte al estado dónde se realizará la cirugía y dos revisiones subsecuentes, hospedaje, transporte y alimentación en el estado dónde radica el médico, así como otros costos relacionados a los cuidados post operatorios, la cantidad estimada para cubrir dichos gastos es de $3355 dólares.
