Help Pam Rubenstein support Danny's care

As many of you may know, my dear husband of 50 years, singing partner & best friend Danny (who recently became epileptic) had a seizure November 15th which caused him to fall and hit his head on our concrete kitchen floor, resulting in a traumatic brain injury.  I called the paramedics and they rushed him to the hospital.

That night, they had to perform a craniotomy (where they removed a portion of his skull to relieve the pressure in his brain.  After his flap of skin and hair healed over and he was out of ICU, he was moving his arms and legs freely and even talking a bit and he eventually recognized me and said "I love you, baby," which gave me hope that he would recover.  Around Christmas time, just before he was to be released to a Skilled Nursing Facility, he was given a drug called Modafinil to help wake him up for therapy, but instead, it put him to sleep and made his heart race, and we believe that is when he had a stroke and his left side become paralyzed.  No one noticed it at the time because he was sleeping so much. From that point on, he does not appear to recognize me.

After he was at the Skilled Nursing Facility for a few weeks, they said he needed to go to a place that specialized in brain injury therapy, so we ended up at a hospital called Encompass Health.  He was there for a couple of weeks, but they said they could not help him, so we then went to another Skilled Nursing Facility which is about 40 minutes from our home.  Throughout this journey, I have kept a close watch over Danny and have visited him every day except one - when I had a urinary tract infection.

The current Skilled Nursing Facility is going to release him very soon, due to his inability to do therapy caused by his constant sleepiness (part of it is that his brain is healing, and part of it is due to him being on some heavy-duty anti-seizure medications, which make him extremely drowsy most of the time.)  I plan to be taking care of him at home - I have been trained in diaper changing and other needed skills, such as enteral (stomach tube) feeding, but the diaper changing is the most challenging since he does not respond to my commands when I need him to roll over.  It is a challenge.

Angela Lee Chen is starting a Go Fund Me page and I hope that you can help us with some of the expenses, such as medications, supplies, and hiring nurses to help out.  Thank you, each and all, for any support you can lend!

- In God's Love, Pam Rubenstein

A note from Angela - you don't have to leave a tip for GFM. They take a fee from the final dollar amount. Many thanks!
