Help Palmer Elementary' s Native Garden Grow
Tax deductible
Join Friends of Palmer in transforming the current area adjacent to Palmer’s turf field into a new native learning garden.
This project, in partnership with local business Kemora Landscapes, will overhaul the existing area at the SE corner of Palmer's playground centered around a well established tree.
The project will involve the following:
- The area is currently improperly graded. Water stands when it rains, preventing grass growth and it turns muddy. The soil is now compacted without grass. The area will be re-graded to have proper run-off directed to the surrounding sidewalks. New sod will be planted.
- Two new native garden plant beds will be introduced to frame it at the north and south boundaries. The new beds will contain native plantings requiring minimal care long term and will be planted with spacings which will become densely grown in 2-3 years time.
- Around the base of the tree and existing benches, playground chip will be installed where grass will not be able to establish itself.
- The existing serpentine freestanding learning gardens will be made ADA compliant, and moved north of the landscape area onto the adjacent cement. Palmer classrooms will continue to utilize them as part of their curriculum.
- 4 new benches will be bolted into the cement around the learning gardens.
The fundraising goal is $15,000.
