Help Palestinian Family Resist Israeli Demolition

Palestinian Family in Jerusalem/Al-Quds at the Frontline of the Ongoing Nakba

My dear friend of over 10 years, Nurredin Amro, who is blind, and his family have been defending their home from demolition and confiscation since it was partially demolished in 2015 as part of a plan by Israel to build a Jewish park and settlement. Most of Nurredin's immediate neighbors have already been demolished and removed. Nurredin is protecting the entire area from confiscation by remaining steadfast, but his family needs financial, political and moral support from all justice-loving people around the world.

Relentless Harassment Since 2015

Nurredin described the surprise partial demolition in 2015 in his OpEd in The Washington Post, “Israel Wrecked My House. Now It Wants My Land.” Since then, Nurredin's family and his brother's family living next door (also blind), have experienced constant harassment, consistent with Israel's official policy to make Jerusalem/Al-Quds unlivable for Palestinians so Israel can maintain a Jewish majority .

Recent Escalation of Violence Against the Amro Family

After a pause during the pandemic, Israeli efforts to displace the Amro Family have escalated. Most recently, Israel has completely surrounded Nurredin's house with a wall forcing them to climb over the wall to get in and out of their home.

Nurredin Amro is a Leader in the Fight for Education for Children With Disabilities

While all Palestinian families facing ethnic cleansing are deserving of support, Nurredin is notable as an important contributor to the Jerusalem community. He founded and runs Siraj al-Quds school for the inclusive education of blind, visually impaired and other marginalized children. He is internationally recognized by Ashoka, Synergos, the British Council and others as an advocate for the rights of children with disabilities. If Nurredin is pushed out of Jerusalem, what will happen to the hundreds of families who benefit from the school?

Please Help!

The Amro Family needs financial, political and moral support. Please be as generous as you can so that Nurredin can hire the best lawyers possible and do the advocacy needed to bring awareness to the urgent danger facing his neighborhood. Please consider contacting your elected representatives to ask them to demand that Israel stop demolishing Palestinian homes in Jerusalem/Al-Quds and respect the human and civil rights of Palestinians. Lastly, please send moral support. The long, tiring work of defending land against Israeli theft is more than Palestinians should bear on their own. Let the Amro family and all Palestinians know that you support their demands for justice, security, dignity and peace.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Nurredin, the Siraj al-Quds school for inclusive education, or Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem. You can learn more and follow my writing at The View From My Window in Palestine .
