Pablo is a remarkable 20-year-old and an aged-out foster youth who has faced more challenges than most people do in a lifetime. As the older brother of three sisters—ages nineteen, sixteen, and eight—and one brother who is just one year old, he has taken on the responsibility of caring for his family from a young age. After dropping out of school at just 13 to work and keep his family from being homeless or hungry, Pablo has spent years working at a fast food restaurant, where he’s become their star employee. His dedication and work ethic have always stood out, and he’s never once complained or asked for help, even as he carried the weight of his family’s future on his shoulders.

We have known Pablo and his oldest sister for a year, and for the past nine months, we have been fostering two of his sisters in our home. Getting to know this family has been a privilege, and we are continually inspired by Pablo’s tenacity, maturity, and kindness. His entire family is either incarcerated, missing, or struggling with addiction, but Pablo made a conscious decision early on to choose a different path. He’s worked hard to build a better life for himself and his siblings, and it has been our pleasure to support him as he takes these first steps toward independence.

Recently, Pablo was nominated for a pre-apprenticeship program, and out of many applicants, he was one of only three former foster youth to graduate. Now, he’s about to start an electrician apprenticeship—a huge step toward a brighter, more stable future. The only thing standing in his way is reliable transportation. Without a vehicle, getting to his new job will be nearly impossible, and we want to make sure nothing holds him back from this opportunity.
