Our dear friend, Oxana Safronova, has been been unable to pay her rent since
August due to staff cutbacks at her place of employment. With years of experience in all aspects food service plus recent part-time work as a gallery assistant, her search for
a job has been unsuccessful and her quarterly earnings were not enough to qualify for
unemployment.
The fact that she still has a roof over head is thanks to the remarkable
forbearance of her landlady who has allowed the debt to mount because she so
admires Oxana’s courage and talents. But even such patience and grace has a limit,
and Oxana’s feelings of shame and guilt over the debt do not help her fragile condition.
She is bravely coping with depression and complex PTSD, in addition to being
neurodivergent and on the autism spectrum. None of this prevents her from working
when given the chance, or making a significant mark in the arts and our culture.
Her short experimental dance film “Feel The Void” was officially selected by the Dance
Camera West Film Festival 2023 and has received recognition from several European
film festivals. Her short stories have been published in the Santa Monica Review and
presented live in the prestigious New Short Fiction Series. Her poem "Death of a
Soldier" in response to the war in Ukraine appeared in Consequence Forum.
With our fundraising goal of $8,000, Oxana can settle her rent debt and cover
basic living expenses.
Our other goal is reaching out to you and people you may know who can offer employment, preferably part-time. Oxana can work remotely or travel to
anywhere in Los Angeles served by public transportation. With part-time work and any
money still accessible to her from this campaign, Oxana will be able to cover tuition and
continue the creative studies at Santa Monica College that have become so much a part
of her healing.
