Hey y'all - I never thought I'd be in this position, but unfortunately I am. In early February, I flew off of an e-bike and broke my left collarbone in addition to getting a respectable concussion and very bruised hip. As most of you probably know, I'm not the best at asking for help or admitting when I need it. That being said, I ultimately found myself at home looking for frozen peas because they fix everything, right? About a week or so after that I was assaulted in the street.
Ultimately, I ended up with a bruised rib, broken clavicle, head trauma and bruised hips - I've missed a lot of work and don't know when I'll be back at 100%. I am hoping to raise at least $5k. I am not sure what will happen once I see the surgeon on March 12th. I will update you all once I see him.
Please scroll below to read the details of what happened.
My housemate/good friend Karina got home a couple hours later after I went home from the Ebike crash and forced me to walk to ER, which is thankfully a block from our home. I got x-rays of my hip and shoulder as well as a CT scan of my head. It was confirmed that I had a concussion and a broken left clavicle. I am also left handed.
I've been working door/security at Pop's & Casement's and was about to take on some bartending shifts at both places the following week.
My first time in ER, I was told that I would have to wear a sling to immobilize my arm/shoulder and hopefully my clavicle would heal on it's own in 5-8 weeks. I was told to avoid screens & stick to activities that did not stress my brain.
I missed a bunch of work and then agreed to join a co-worker from Pop's to go see St. Vincent at Grace Cathedral. This was about a week after my head had visibly healed from the concussion. We went for drinks at Emperor Norton's in the Tenderloin and were walking to the smoke shop before heading to GAMH, ultimately to Grace Cathedral for St. Vincent.
A guy was riding his mountain bike on the sidewalk. I heard him coming and moved out of the way as did my friend. My friend popped off on him a bit and I thought everything was fine after that. He ended up parking his bicycle and came back to make a point. I don't remember this part, but apparently he "doesn't hit bitches" and got into it with my friend before clocking me really hard in my left jaw and knocked me out cold.
I'm told I went down unconscious like a tree. Thankfully, I was wearing the sling for my broken clavicle so my arm didn't move. My jacket and hat somehow stayed on. I'm also told I got up after about 6 seconds of being unconscious and then walked to GAMH. I had multiple conversations with ppl I don't remember. They were calling me 50 first dates. Finally, the 6th time I asked why my jaw was sore, I remembered what my friend was saying to me.
I ended up at ER for the second time with my housemate. They did more head scans and x-rays. Thankfully, they said that nothing got damaged more than my first scans. I did end up with bruised ribs and abrasions on the other side of my head as a result of wearing the sling.
I have had a hell of a time getting in to see an orthopedic surgeon. I still don't know if I need surgery. I've gottne 4 referrals (one to an office that was closed, another to an office that doesn't take my insurance, another to an ORTHODONTIST and then the most recent). I wasn't functional for the first week due to the concussion.
I am doing my best to figure out how to get disability. It has been a challenge with the referral issues I've had and lack of doctor's notes. To date, I've only gotten a note that has excused me through March 3rd.
To add salt to the wound, I turn 39 next week. I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to pay rent, storage, food, etc.
It would be a huge help if y'all could throw some bones my way. I don't have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon until March 12th and won't know until then if I need surgery or will need to cross my fingers and wear this sling for a lot longer.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading through everything. I know everything sucks, I read the news more than I should, but if you're able to even send $5 my way - things add up in the long run.
I hope you all are well and look forward to being mobile and to spending time with you in the future.
