Help Our Wonderful Teacher!

Erin Lobato is a beloved high school English teacher at Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, TX. Her family consists of her loving husband Brett and two daughters, one going into 4th grade and the other going into 8th grade. In May, she was admitted to the hospital with critically high blood pressure, and after running a gamut of tests, was officially diagnosed with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). This is an extremely rare genetic disorder that causes her blood to clot abnormally, and has caused her to go into end-stage renal failure. She has been at the hospital for over a month now and is receiving dialysis 5-6 times per week, as well as Solaris infusions, which is the only known treatment for this condition. The hope is that it will jump-start her kidneys to work again. So far it has not proven successful, but it could take up to a year to take effect. Each Solaris treatment costs $20,000, and the doctors are trying to get her insurance to cover it. After she is discharged from the hospital, she will remain on out-patient dialysis 3 times per week for some time.  She would like to return to work when school starts, at least on a part-time basis, but that depends on her health and how she is responding to treatment. As is true to her nature, she has remained positive and up-beat during all this, though the treatments make her feel terribly ill with fatigue, nausea, and pain.
