Our Goal = $3,800 toward tickets for our film team + $3,800 donated to Unite Here
Hi! We're Laura and Alex. We're part of a small film team made up of independent documentary filmmakers.
Our team has spent the last 3 years working on a film we’re all really proud of. It examines labor, the effects of globalization, and America's eroding middle class. Our film uses archival footage to tell the story of the 40,000+ people who protested against the World Trade Organization in Seattle in 1999.
Our film is completely independent. It has been touring the country this year, winning awards at film festivals across the US. And we've been getting a lot of positive feedback.
In fact, our team has been nominated for a prestigious award that many indie teams don't get considered for. It's an award that is often the first stop on the road to the Oscars. It's an incredible honor. But.
No comped tickets are given to nominees. And for our team of 4 to attend the awards - the cost of our tickets is $3,800. We do not have $3,800 in our budget to cover this. And it is more money than a bunch of indie filmmakers can afford to pay on our own.
The cost of our tickets is $3,800 but we're looking to raise $7,600 because 50% of all funds received will be donated to Unite Here, an organization that supports hospitality workers across the nation who make events like these possible.
The other nominees are backed by places like Amazon, Apple, ESPN, HBO, Hulu, MTV/Paramount, National Geographic, and Netflix. We're one of a very small number of teams without backing from a large studio or streamer.
But we'd really like to be there. And we think it's absurd that the cost of admission is so high.
So we're asking for help to get our core team to these awards. Because they all deserve to be in that room. It's a huge honor and a huge opportunity. And because making a film about the ever-widening class divide makes us want to be transparent about how events like this simply aren't accessible, even to their nominees.
(TL;DR: The awards industrial complex is real. And it's really expensive.)
