Help Our Teacher Overcome Her Housing Crisis

Nuestra profesora Cointa dedicó su vida a formar generaciones con compromiso, entrega y amor. Hoy, en su momento más vulnerable, nos necesita a nosotros.

Tras sufrir la amputación de una pierna, ya no puede valerse por sí misma. En otros contextos, después de la rehabilitación, habría regresado a un hogar con adaptaciones básicas que le permitieran mantener algo de independencia. Pero eso es un lujo imposible en su país.

Gracias a la generosidad de muchos que nos unimos previamente, logramos enviarle alimentos, medicinas, silla de ruedas, silla para el baño, andador, ventilador recargable, ollas eléctricas, refrigerador y más. Pero la realidad sigue siendo alarmante.

La profesora vive en una casa prácticamente inhabitable:

• Sin acceso regular al agua. Su hermano, quien la acompaña, debe caminar dos cuadras cada día para cargar el agua necesaria.

• Con solo dos horas de electricidad al día —cuando hay suerte—.

• Y con un techo que amenaza con colapsar con la llegada de la temporada ciclónica.

Hoy no sabemos aún si lo más sensato será reparar su vivienda actual o encontrar una alternativa más segura. Pero lo que sí sabemos es que necesita ayuda, y la necesita ya.

Our teacher dedicated her life to educating generations with commitment, care, and love. Now, in her most vulnerable moment, she needs us more than ever.

After undergoing a leg amputation, she is no longer able to care for herself. In other circumstances, after rehabilitation, she would have returned to a home with basic adaptations that allowed for some independence. But in her country, that is an unattainable luxury.

Thanks to the generosity of many, we’ve already been able to send her food, medicine, a wheelchair, a shower chair, a walker, a rechargeable fan, electric cooking pots, a refrigerator, and more. But the reality remains critical:

• She lives in a house that’s nearly uninhabitable.

• She has no regular access to water—her brother, who takes care of her, must walk two blocks every day to fetch it.

• She only has electricity for a couple of hours a day—on a good day.

• And the roof is at risk of collapsing with the approaching hurricane season.

We don’t yet know whether the best course is to repair her current home or find a safer alternative. What we do know is that she needs help—and she needs it now.
