Help our “Sweet Caroline” fight colon cancer
Donation protected
My sweet and bubbly sister-in-law Caroline, received the dreaded news in early January, that the persistent pain in her side and gradual weight loss were due to Stage III colon cancer. After years of quietly organizing and providing support for the care of other family members, which often included feeding large groups of said family and friends, now it’s her turn to allow her large tribe of mother, brothers, sisters, children and friends to care for her.
On January 25th Caroline had surgery to remove the large tumor in her colon (dubbed “Gut-three” or Guthrie by sister Noni), adjacent lymph nodes and a suspicious lesion on her internal abdominal wall adjacent to the tumor. Test results confirmed that the cancer had spread locally to those tissues. The course of treatment laid out by Caroline’s oncologist, is six months of chemotherapy followed by targeted radiation. As long as she continues to heal well from the removal of Guthrie and his criminal associates, chemo is set to start on February 24th after surgery to install her chemotherapy port on February 23rd.
Like many full-time employees of small businesses, Caroline could not afford medical insurance. Caroline had no insurance in December to cover the diagnostic testing that included multiple doctor appointments, blood work, ultra-sound and CT scan. Though she now has an insurance plan in place, we expect the coverage to fall short of the need. She needs help right now to cover the bills from the uninsured medical expenses from December as well as on-going and future medical care. Prayers are also greatly appreciated!
Though the prognosis is good for Caroline, we want her to be able to focus on the continued fight and recovery process instead of the stress of mounting medical bills. We believe Caroline along with the millions of other uninsured fighting serious illnesses, deserve an alternative way to pay for treatment other than to declare bankruptcy.
In early January, Caroline retired from her position with Anthony Jennings and Crew Real Estate, LLC, Ashland, WI to heal from the tumor removal surgery and prepare for the fight ahead.
Caroline has two children, four grandchildren and a brand new great-grand child! In addition, her mother Helen, partner Ken, six brothers and sisters, gaggle of in-laws (or “out”-laws, yes, I know which category I fall into), extensive non-blood family and friends all want her to recover so we can continue our little weekend adventures of thrifting, contentious scrabble games, hikes to points around Lake Superior and watching the sunrise from her porch over cups of coffee. And yes, suffering through many, many more warbled renditions of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” from those that love her!
