Help Our Son Get His Vision Back Please
Donation protected
I don't even really know where to start. Our hearts are hurting for our 10yr old son, Braidon. I'll try to make his story as short as I can. I want to first ask for prayers for him please. Prayers are greatly appreciated.
So almost 2yrs ago Braidon started saying his vision was blurry and he couldn't see good. After saying it for a little bit we made him an eye doctor appt. We took him and the eye doctor said there was nothing wrong. He didn't dilate Braidon's eyes or anything. No eye pressure check, nothing. Just asked him to read some letters on the wall and glanced at his eyes. So we trusted the eye doctor and told our son nothing was wrong. Braidon didn't say anything for a little bit then he started telling us again that his vision was blurry, he said sometimes his vision was dark, he said he would sometimes see bright flashes, occasionally he had a floater, he said that it looked like he had a curtain on half of his eye. I noticed he seemed to squint sometimes. So I asked his teacher to move him up closer because he said he couldn't see the board good. I thought for a little while that he was just overreacting because the eye doctor told us nothing was wrong. So more time went by and a few months ago we took him to his pediatrician for a routine wellness check. When they were performing his vision screening he couldn't see the letters on the wall. They tried using a machine to look at his eyes and the machine couldn't even pick up that he had a right eye pupil. So they grabbed another machine and it did the same thing. Couldn't read his eye, machine couldn't recognize his right eye. So they referred us to an Optimologist in Baton Rouge. She is amazing and so caring. She dilated his eyes and was able to immediately see that he has a detached retina with alot of scar tissue over it. My heart sank and all I could do was cry for him. I felt terrible that I thought he was overreacting and just saying things. All because I trusted an eye doctor that I didn't know. Talk about feeling like the worst mom in the world. I apologized to him multiple times and told him I'd do whatever I have to do to help him. He has the biggest heart. He kept telling me it wasn't my fault. He is so brave and strong. His Optimologist in Louisiana referred us to an Opthamalogist in Houston,TX due to the severity and our son's age. Then unfortunately we found out that the Opthamalogist in Texas is out of network for our insurance. So we called our insurance and got a list of in network Opthamalogist and the Optimologist in Louisiana began going down the list calling Opthamalogists for us. We ended up getting to see an Opthamalogist at Emory University in Atlanta,Ga this past Monday (12.07.20) well after being there for nearly 6hrs during which they dilated his eyes, numbed his eyes, performed a pressure test I've never seen before, did more xrays of his eyes, and also did an ultrasound on his right eye. We finally got to leave with instructions to get alot of bloodwork done and instructions to give him prescription steroid eye drops four times a day for 2 weeks. But unfortunately we left feeling even more discouraged, uneasy, and confused. We got the bloodwork done and are awaiting results and we've been using the eye drops as directed. So I called his Optimologist in Louisiana and explained what happened at his appt with the Opthamalogist in Georgia. I sent them the pics of his ultrasound and other info from the appt. I expressed how we're feeling and so on. They then asked us again if we could go to the Opthamalogist in Texas instead because that Opthamalogist is one of the best and knows what he's doing. He's the best option for our son.
We're currently in Georgia due to employment. I have been out of work for a couple of weeks now because our other son had tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and frenulumectomy surgery recently and because we've been having appointments for Braidon and such.
We would normally not ask for any help from anyone but unfortunately since the Opthamalogist in Houston,TX is out of network for our insurance we have to ask for help. We can't come up with twelve thousand dollars within a couple of weeks. There's no way we can. I wish we could because asking people for help is not one of my strong points. I know it is close to Christmas and alot of people are still dealing with affects from the Corona just like us. We completely understand. But if you find it in your heart to donate to help our son we will forever be grateful. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. If you can't donate please pray for our son, any chance you get please pray for him. We really need to get him to Texas and get the help he needs. The longer we wait the higher the chance of his vision loss being absolutely permanent. He is a sweet, loving, adventurous, caring, animal loving, huge horse loving, dirtbike riding, great artist, big hearted, outdoorsy boy.
