If there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's just how generous and caring our community can be.

We've seen the people of Fort Frances and the surrounding area come together time and time again to help neighbours, friends and even complete strangers through difficult times. It's one of the things we love most about where we live.

And today, we're reaching out to ask for that generosity and compassion once again.

On September 22, a fire at Rose Manor in Fort Frances forced residents from their homes. Since then, the District of Rainy River Services Board (DRRSB) has been providing temporary hotel accommodations while residents work to find alternative housing.

Unfortunately, the current hotel arrangement is scheduled to end on November 15, and several residents are still trying to find somewhere suitable and affordable to live.

Hearing directly from some of these residents and listening to their stories really brought home just how difficult this situation is for them.

Most of the residents are seniors, and many are living on limited fixed incomes. Some have tenant insurance, while others do not. And with the housing shortage we're already experiencing in Fort Frances, finding somewhere affordable to live is challenging enough without suddenly having to pack up your life and start over.

For many of the residents, moving brings its own challenges, and getting settled somewhere new can be overwhelming, particularly for those with health or mobility challenges.

And here's something important for local landlords to know!
If you're a private landlord with an apartment, house or other suitable rental accommodation available, please consider reaching out. Rental assistance may be available through DRRSB for those who qualify, helping residents afford private-market rentals.

You can contact Melissa Pearson to share what you have available. Message on here or find me on facebook. It doesn't allow me to post my contact info.

But finding somewhere to live is only part of the challenge.

There are moving costs, transportation expenses, deposits, furniture, household necessities and so many other unexpected expenses. These costs can be overwhelming.

And that's why we're starting this fundraiser.

Our First Priority: Making Sure Everyone Has Somewhere Safe to Stay

Our most immediate concern is what happens on November 15, when funding for the current hotel accommodations is scheduled to end.

Our first priority will be to help residents secure safe accommodations beyond that date, with the most urgent housing needs taking priority.

That could mean helping with temporary accommodations, moving expenses, deposits, transportation or other essential costs that stand between someone and having a safe place to live.

Once immediate housing needs have been addressed, any remaining funds will be used to provide additional assistance to residents affected by the Rose Manor fire, helping with the costs of getting settled, replacing belongings and rebuilding some stability in their lives.

The assistance we're able to provide will depend on the amount raised and the needs of the residents.

We've set an initial fundraising goal of $40,000, recognizing that the actual need may be greater depending on how many residents require continued accommodations and other assistance.

Our goal is simple. Help as many residents as possible and make sure the generosity of our community goes where it can make the greatest difference.

How Donations Will Be Managed

We, Melissa Pearson and Joanne Smith, are organizing this fundraiser to help residents displaced by the Rose Manor fire.

Together, we will oversee the funds raised and coordinate assistance based on the needs identified and the amount available.

Whenever possible, payments for immediate accommodation and housing-related expenses will be made directly to service providers or businesses.

Funds will be deposited into a designated bank account, and records of expenditures will be maintained.

All net proceeds will be used for the benefit of residents affected by the Rose Manor fire, with urgent housing needs taking priority.

This Is Where Our Community Can Make a Difference ❤️

These are our neighbours. People who, just a short time ago, had a place they called home and no reason to believe their lives were about to be turned upside down.

It's difficult to imagine facing so much uncertainty, particularly when your financial resources are already stretched.

Every donation, no matter the amount, can help. It all adds up. And if you're not in a position to donate, sharing this fundraiser is another wonderful way to help.

They've already been through so much. And while we can't undo what's happened, we can help them find their footing again and move forward with a little less worry and uncertainty.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for whatever support you're able to give. ❤️
