Hi, we’re Laura and Sal, and we’re writing this about our mum, Serena.

Hola, somos Laura y Sal, y estamos escribiendo esto sobre nuestra mamá, Serena.

She has always been the one taking care of everyone else—funny, loving, strong, and endlessly giving. Now she is facing a challenge she cannot overcome alone. We are sharing her story because we want to give her every possible chance to heal and stay with us.

Ella siempre ha sido quien cuida de los demás: divertida, cariñosa, fuerte y generosa sin límites. Ahora se enfrenta a un desafío que no puede superar sola. Compartimos su historia porque queremos darle todas las oportunidades posibles para sanar y seguir con nosotros.

In 2012, our mum was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump. At the time, we were just four and six years old. She went through chemotherapy, and then drove over 100 kilometres every day for radiotherapy—all while continuing to take care of us. She carried everything. She was extraordinary.

En 2012, a nuestra mamá le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama tras descubrirse un bulto. En ese momento, nosotros teníamos solo cuatro y seis años. Pasó por quimioterapia y luego conducía más de 100 kilómetros cada día para recibir radioterapia, mientras seguía cuidando de nosotros. Cargó con todo. Fue extraordinaria.

She always held everything together for our family—until she couldn’t anymore. In January 2025, after 23 years, she separated from our father and began rebuilding her life from the ground up, moving into a new home and trying to create stability for us and our dog, Maui. It was meant to be a fresh start.

Siempre intentó mantener a la familia unida… hasta que ya no pudo más. En enero de 2025, después de 23 años, se separó de nuestro padre y reconstruir su vida desde cero, mudándose a una nueva casa e intentando crear estabilidad para nosotros y nuestro perro, Maui. Se suponía que era un nuevo comienzo.

But just as she began to find her footing, life changed again.

Pero justo cuando empezaba a encontrar su equilibrio, la vida volvió a cambiar.

In June, she started experiencing severe rib pain. It was initially dismissed as an intercostal muscle strain, and like always, she pushed through it to keep going for us. In September, we received devastating news.

En junio, comenzó a sentir un fuerte dolor en las costillas. Al principio se diagnosticó como una distensión muscular intercostal y, como siempre, siguió adelante por nosotros. En septiembre recibimos una noticia devastadora.

Her breast cancer had returned and metastasised.

El cáncer había vuelto y se había metastatizado.

This time, it is more aggressive—affecting her lymphatic system, liver, and bones, where it has already caused multiple rib fractures.

Esta vez es más agresivo: afecta al sistema linfático, al hígado y a los huesos, donde ya ha provocado múltiples fracturas costales.

We have watched our mum go through some of the darkest moments of her life. After countless blood transfusions and treatments that have left her physically and emotionally exhausted, there have been times when she has questioned whether she has the strength to continue.

Hemos visto a nuestra mamá atravesar algunos de los momentos más oscuros de su vida. Tras innumerables transfusiones de sangre y tratamientos que la han dejado física y emocionalmente agotada, ha habido momentos en los que ha dudado si tendría fuerzas para seguir adelante.

Finding the Will to Heal

Despite receiving a palliative diagnosis, our mum has made the decision not to give up.

A pesar de haber recibido un diagnóstico paliativo, nuestra mamá ha decidido no rendirse.

She has stripped life back to basics—focusing on her nutrition, mental wellbeing, and mindset. We have also recently found a medical approach that she truly believes in.

Ha simplificado su vida al máximo, centrándose en su alimentación, su bienestar mental y su actitud. También hemos encontrado recientemente un enfoque médico en el que realmente cree.

For the first time in months, we are seeing a shift. Her energy is changing—from simply enduring, to actively moving forward toward a new future.

Por primera vez en meses, estamos viendo un cambio. Su energía está transformándose: de simplemente resistir, a avanzar activamente hacia un nuevo futuro.

It is not easy. But she has found a deep determination to do everything she can to rebuild her life. As her children, we want to make sure she has every possible chance to do so.

No es fácil. Pero ha encontrado una profunda determinación para hacer todo lo posible por reconstruir su vida. Como sus hijos, queremos asegurarnos de que tenga todas las oportunidades para lograrlo.

Our mum has always been our rock—supporting us (now 19 and 20) as we begin adulthood, while continuing to care for everything and everyone around her.

I have just read these beautiful words from my children, and I cannot express how deeply touched I am—or the love I am feeling right now.

Acabo de leer estas preciosas palabras de mis hijos y no puedo expresar lo profundamente emocionada que estoy ni el amor que siento en este momento.

Life can hit us in the hardest ways. If I am completely honest, I have always been a fighter. Now I am learning to be kinder to myself and to accept that I am not alone on this journey.

La vida puede golpearnos de las formas más duras. Si soy completamente honesta, siempre he sido una luchadora. Ahora estoy aprendiendo a ser más amable conmigo misma y a aceptar que no estoy sola en este camino.
