Hi all. Devastated to let everyone know that my 79 year old mom had a terrible fall September 23rd. My mom and I were just on our weekly walk to go to lunch. She wound up breaking her left hip, dislocating the femur, breaking her left elbow, fracturing her right knee as well as ripping tendons off of the patella.
Because of her age they wanted to do all three surgeries at the same time but because of her age that put her at very high risk for not pulling through as the surgery was nearly 12 hours. Thankfully she made it and started to breathe on her own and was able to get off of the ventilator after being in the ICU for several days. She had a hip replacement, plate put into her elbow and multiple types of hardware put into her right knee. Aside from all of these injuries, she's also diabetic, has stage 3 kidney disease, has osteoporosis and had a stroke in 2013.
Long story short, she now needs to be discharged and needs 24 hour care for the next several months. She is 100% immobile and can't even get off her bed to use the bathroom. Turning her on her side to clean her-she screams in pain. It's an absolute nightmare. The only choice for this type of care is at a Board and Care or Residential Care Home. Her insurance WILL NOT cover any of that and she will need to be there for several months and it is so expensive. My sister and I don't know what else to do but this. We are heartbroken and feel so desperate and helpless.
We know times for everyone are so hard right now and the world is crazy. Anything will help so much. Even just sharing the link.
Thank you all so much
