Greetings, Our mom is 51 years old and living with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Over the past three years, she’s been unemployed and surviving on her retirement while trying to remain independent. That money is now gone, and basic living expenses are becoming impossible to manage.

The most critical step right now is obtaining a PET brain scan required by her doctor. This scan is the key to confirming her diagnosis, which is necessary to secure disability benefits. With disability, the end goal is to place her in safe housing where she can receive help with day-to-day needs and live with dignity long-term. Unfortunately, finding a facility that offers this scan and accepts her insurance has been extremely difficult. After extensive research and countless calls with her insurance, we’ve learned that the only realistic option may be an out-of-network scan. This one scan is the single thing stopping the entire process. Without it, disability cannot be approved. Without disability, appropriate housing and care are out of reach. On top of this, rent and basic living costs continue while insurance does not cover the facilities we need, putting us in an increasingly urgent situation.

Me and my sister are doing everything we can. My sister has taken on managing doctor appointments, disability applications, and housing coordination while raising a 13-year-old and a 2-year-old—all while dealing with her own financial challenges. We’re asking for help because this situation is bigger than what we can carry alone.
