3rd Update:
First, as Ethan's family, we'd like to thank you from the deepest parts of our hearts for the prayers and donations given to assist him in the many months to come. It has been a myriad of emotions since a chance decision changed his life forever.
In sharing with his Chief about the could-haves and should-of-dones, he shared that the news story would have been quite different had Ethan not made that decision to go into that smoking apartment to get them out. The firefighters Ethan works with are covering his shifts so he still receives a paycheck to pay the necessary health insurance premiums. His mother, an elementary school teacher will probably need to resign in order to care for him until he can do so on his own. Ethan's truck and apartment may have to be surrendered and his beloved dog Sunday, is living with others until they both can be reunited. So much more that is too long to list here.
I don't suppose we will ever know why the decision was made to not follow the directive Ethan gave about leaving the flaming pot of oil alone, but that single act has affected many lives for some time to come.
I asked Ethan his thoughts about such a decision and his simple response has redefined the truest sense of what it means to be heroic. Ethan said, "Well, I wanted to help him too."
2nd Update:
Updates occur as we better understand the events that took place last Friday afternoon. More than anything, Ethan's family want the information to be true and accurate. However, the main witness has been mostly unconscious.
Ethan continues to progress through the healing process as well as can be expected for the type of burns sustained during this unfortunate accident.
When walking his dog, he noticed smoke coming from a nearby apartment. Realizing this, he entered the residence to ensure people were no longer inside only to discover what we know now as four children and one adult. After ensuring the children were safely outside, Ethan tried to convince the occupant to leave the burning oil alone and was hurt in the process. Ethan was burned nearly 40% of his body, in particular severe damage to his entire left arm and hand with third-degree burns. Other second and third-degree burns include both legs and portions of his torso. PT and OT has already begun.
Thank you to all of you for the countless prayers, uplifting messages, and gesures of giving during this uncertain time as he's already expressed deep concern about his financial obligations while not working.
To Ethan...there is only ONE who truly knows what might've been had you not acted in that moment; especially for those two children that you still ask about. We hope as your family, closest friends, and community, we can make things a little easier as you endure this painful journey towards healing. You are deeply loved by those that are deserving of your fierce and loyal love.°•♡.
***7/24/21 UPDATE***
We are raising our goal…we know he will be in the ICU for at LEAST 2-3 months…we do not want him to be crippled by medical bills.
THANK YOU to all who have given so far, you are blowing us away by your kindness and generosity!!
