Wheeler came to us early last year from a friend of mine who worked as a vet assistant and a family came in to euthanize their little Yorkie because they didn’t want to take care of him any longer. The vet assistant couldn’t let them put him down as he was still very young and had a lot of life and love to still give. So, she called me and asked if I’d be willing to take him into our rescue. At the time we didn’t have room but we said yes anyway to ensure he’d get the love and attention he needed.
Fast forward to November of 2022, we finally found a woman who was searching for a special needs dog to foster and potentially adopt. We screened her thoroughly and did everything we normally do for new prospective fosters or adopters including the application, home check and contract. She took him camping, and on all sorts of adventures but unfortunately she had contacted us at the beginning of January and told us he began to develop wounds on his back feet and we told her to bring him back to us so we could get him checked at the vet since she said the wounds were getting worse. She then returned him to us days later but shockingly WITH ONE OF HIS LEGS MISSING THE ENTIRE BOTTOM PORTION OF HIS FOOT!!!
Wheeler had bone and muscle tissue exposed and we immediately knew there was something else the foster wasn’t telling us. After trying to ask her what else she did with him that could have caused this to happen she simply stated that she did not see his foot that bad on the day she brought him back, we told her that there was absolutely no way that this could have happened over night and we told her he would absolutely not be going back to her.
Right now we are getting diagnostic work and getting an estimate for his amputation as there is no way we can save one of his feet due to the extensive tissue damage.
Our rescue desperately needs funds to help pay for Wheeler’s surgery and ongoing care. As of right now we only have the estimate for diagnostics but will be getting one for his surgery soon. Please consider making a small donation today to help us get Wheeler the best care he needs for his poor little feetsies!
