Our grandmother has been in and out of the hospital for the past month while battling serious health complications. Last week, her condition worsened and she was transferred to the ICU in Fuzhou, China, where she is now receiving critical care.

Because she is a Canadian citizen receiving treatment abroad, she is not covered by local health benefits. The cost of ICU care is approximately $1,500 CAD per day, and these expenses continue to grow as she fights to stay with us. We thought about medical transport to bring her back to Canada but unfortunately, that is not feasible for us.

Recent medical testing of fluid from our grandma’s lungs revealed multiple serious infections, including fungal pneumonia and other bacterial infections affecting her lungs. Doctors also detected viral infections that can reactivate when the immune system becomes extremely weak.

Because of these complications, she requires constant monitoring and respiratory support in the ICU. She recently underwent a tracheostomy surgery to help her breathe more comfortably and give her the best chance to continue fighting.

When our family learned how serious her condition had become, we immediately dropped everything in Canada and travelled to China to be by her side. Being there with her during this time felt like the only choice we could make... especially with the possibility that she may pass away. But leaving our lives and work behind so suddenly has created a heavy financial strain on top of the mounting medical costs.

The combination of ICU care, surgery, and urgent travel has become overwhelming for our family to manage alone. We are asking for help so we can continue to support her and ensure she receives the care she needs during this critical time - and with the hopes of recovery, future rehabilitation costs.

My grandma is a gangsta - at least that’s what I always tell people when I talk about her. She is soft, compassionate, and has an amazing sense of humor, but she’s never been afraid to speak up for herself. She is everything I aspire to be.

She raised and took care of my siblings and me while we were growing up. She has always put her family first, sometimes at the cost of her own comfort, and she has never once complained about doing the right thing.

Now our family is doing everything we can to be there for her the way she has always been there for us.
