Dear friends, family and kind-hearted individuals,
It is with a heavy, but hopeful heart, that we share a little about our sweet and spunky, Sophia. Sophia is my four-year-old niece and she has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Her parents, Chris Aguon and Lourdes (Lola) Redila, left Guam yesterday for care and treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, exactly three weeks since being admitted at Guam Memorial Hospital on February 02, 2024. They are staying with our Blas family in San Diego.
Over the past two months, Sophia had trouble walking due to pain. She started limping and then stopped walking all together. When she was sitting or being carried, she was completely content and happy. Yet, when her parents would try to encourage her to walk or stand, she would cry out in pain. She had sprained her foot and hurt her toe while playing previously and they thought the reluctance to walk was due to this. Sophia recently caught a cold and didn’t recover very quickly. She was weak and coughing and her parents knew something wasn’t right. They took her in to her doctor and he immediately sent Sophia to the emergency room. He said she was very pale and needed to be seen urgently. Once admitted, tests were conducted, and it was deemed necessary for Sophia to have a blood transfusion due to an extremely low platelet count. She was much better after a few days, but her platelets remained low. After a week, a bone marrow test was conducted and sent to Hawaii for results. These results confirmed that Sophia has B-Cell Actue Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL).
Before the bone pain, Sophia loved dancing, riding her bike & scooter and playing with her siblings and cousins. She loves going to the beach, singing, Barbies, and eating the yummy food her mommy & daddy cook. Sophia is both sweet and spicy, always voicing her opinion. She tells you what she wants! Right now, she understands that she has to be in the hospital, but all she wants is to go home and get back to her 4-year- old life of playing, running and having fun. We just love her so very much and we miss her!
We are reaching out to our friends, our family and even to those who may not know us personally, with the hope of raising the funds to ease the burden of medical and travel expenses. Chris and Lola are both with Sophia in San Diego. However, after the initial phase of treatment, Chris plans to travel back to Guam to be with their other littles, Anaiah and Noah. We are uncertain of the length of time Lola & Sophia will stay in San Diego and how often Chris and kids will fly back and forth or when they'll be able to come home.
We also ask that you pray for Sophia and for her family as they battle the days to come. Please pray specifically that Sophia's leukemia will go into remission. Pray for Sophia to stay healthy as she undergoes medical tests and begins treatment, for strength for her little body, for her parents as they support her and one another and for her siblings as their daily lives change from what they’re used to. They haven't been all together since February 02, 2024.
We will post updates and photos as they become available.
We thank you in advance, for reading this, for any help you’re able to offer and for your prayers.
"Now, to Him who is able to do immeasurably more that all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory int he church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever, Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21
