On November 4th, Susan had a seizure at her home, which resulted in brain bleeding and broken vertebrae. She was flown via Flight-for-Life to UCHealth in Denver where she had back surgery to fuse five vertebrae. After 17 days she was released from the hospital.
While in the car with her husband, Chad, on way home from hospital she developed extreme pain in her legs and could not stand up to get out of the car when she arrived home. She was taken to YVMC and then, again, transferred to UCHealth in Denver, where a blood clot was discovered at the recent back surgery site. The blood clot/surgery to remove it damaged her spinal cord and she is now paralyzed from her hips down.
After two more weeks at UCHealth, she was transferred to Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Englewood, CO where she remained for 2.5 months. She is currently in a wheelchair, but hopeful that, with hard work, she may eventually walk again.
She returned home this week and was faced with the shocking financial reality of her extensive medical treatment. Thousands of dollars are owed for deductibles, co-pays, and items/services not covered by her insurance. In addition, significant future costs are expected, including months of travel expenses back to Craig Hospital in Denver for critically needed out patient physical therapy.
Prior to this, Susan worked as a case manager for Lift Up and as a part-time massage therapist at OTHS. Though her husband remains employed as the planner for the Town of Eagle, CO, Susan has had no income since the incident occurred and is unable to return to work at any time in the foreseeable future.
Though both have given to the community in many ways during their 23 years in Steamboat, Susan and Chad never imagined they would be placed in this position. However, financial reality has made it necessary to ask for help. They are sincerely grateful in advance for any assistance they may receive through this fundraiser.
