Our family met Sergio ten years ago when he started taking care of our yard. He is the happy, familiar face we looked forward to seeing every Tuesday. Sergio’s life changed at the end of July of this year when undiagnosed diabetes created a crisis that required amputation and rehabilitation.
During a recent visit to the rehabilitation center where he has been for several weeks, I learned that Sergio’s visitors are former clients and friends. People he has known for years because Sergio has always worked. Since the emergency amputation of his legs, Sergio has had to rely on the love of his family in Mexico, and the generosity and care of his community. Sergio made Houston his home in 1991 and has not returned to see his mother, brothers, and sisters since then.
We are raising funds to pay for Sergio’s rent while he receives medical care and awaits his prosthetic legs. He plans to return to Mexico in six months.
On a difficult day, I channel Sergio’s positivity and can-do attitude. Please help our friend so he can recover to rebuild his life alongside his family.
