Help Freddy Walk Without Pain

Meet Freddy, our goof best friend. Freddy is a 1.5 year old pit mix with such a strong spirit and enough energy to cross oceans. Freddy and his brother, Bailey, were both rescued from backyard breeders prioriting looks and not health, and Freddy unfortunately got the short end of the stick. He's ugly too.

At 6 months old, Freddy began limping severely overnight. Our primary vet misdiagnosed him, and told us he would need to wait until he was done growing before performing a seperate, intensive surgery. For over a year now, Freddy has been walking around on insufficient legs and forced to abstain from growing puppy activities, such as rough housing with his brother, dog parks, or any intensive exercise. The time has come for his legs to be fixed and life to begin.

From a second opinion, Freddy was diagnosed with grade 3 luxating patellas in both hind legs- meaning his kneecaps are constantly dislocated, making walking difficult and incredibly painful. On top of that, his femurs are bowed- which heightens the condition and weakens surrounding ligaments and cartilage. Surgery is the only cure.

While this condition is common in toy breeds, its rare and more complicated with dogs his size. Freddy needs two seperate surgeries, one on each back leg. Its only until they open him up where they can assess the true damage to his surrounding joints, ligaments, and cartilage that may have resulted from delaying surgery for the past year. Depending on how severe, his bowed femurs may also need correcting. The recovery period is 8-12 weeks per leg, in which he will need to be completely isolated from Bailey and crated 24/7 until he begins physical therapy.

Included are his x-rays, and the full estimate for the cost of each leg. This amounts to $13,000, not including medications, post-surgery complications, or physical therapy- which is required to reteach Freddy how to walk, as he has developed a "weird" gate to componsate for his dysfunctional knees which is no doubt not healthy for his joints in the long run.

Hector and I are prepared to do absolutely anything to give Freddy the life we committed to giving him when we adopted the boys. However, we have still not financially recovered from the flood Broward county experienced 2 years ago, we have already spent thousands on his misdiagnosis, and on top of everything a large portion of my financial aid was recently revoked.

Anyone who's met the boys know how special they are, not just to us but to everyone they meet- they turn heads wherever we go and even poeple with stimgas against the breed stop to inquire about him. When he was a puppy we had a neighbor stop and offer us 5k for him (if only we had listened!).

In an attempt to raise funds, we are baking and selling dog treats to our local community. However, if you don't have dogs and/or are located out of state we created this as an opportunity to contribute if you'd like to.
