Help Our Family Recover from the RGV Flood
On March 27th, the Rio Grande Valley was hit with severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, leading to historic floods and leaving many residents without homes and/or vehicles. Our home was among those severely impacted by the flooding—with 9 inches of water, destroying nearly everything we owned, including all our furniture, bedroom sets, JD’s baby swing, changing table, and so much more. Seeing JD’s nursery in ruins after everything he has already overcome breaks my heart. Our neighborhood, located in Mercedes, TX, was one of the hardest hit.
My baby, JD, just turned one this past month—a milestone we once only dreamed of when he was fighting for his life in the NICU last year. Now, we’re facing a new battle. Our home remained flooded for four long and exhausting days.
To make matters worse, after wading through dirty floodwaters trying to save what we could, I developed pneumonia and tested positive for COVID-19, likely after being exposed while caring for my sick parents. I’ve been out of work for over a week due to the severity of my illness—unpaid—at a time when we desperately need financial stability.
On top of everything, we now need somewhere to stay temporarily. Our home is in the process of being reconstructed, but the smell of humidity and mildew is overwhelming. It’s not safe for my baby to be here in these conditions. We’re trying to keep JD healthy and safe while juggling so much uncertainty and loss.
Back in 2008, when Hurricane Dolly hit, we only had 4 inches of water in our home. This time, when we were unprepared, we were hit with more than double that. Our home insurance was canceled last year due to financial hardship, and we’re unsure if we’ll qualify for any local or state assistance. Right now, we’re just trying to get through each day, facing the overwhelming reality of damage, illness, displacement, and uncertainty.
If you’re able to help—whether by donating or simply sharing our story—we would be deeply grateful. Every little bit helps as we work to recover and rebuild for JD.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and support. ❤️
