Our Home Flooded — We Need Help Recovering
This past Sunday, September 28th, at around midnight, my family experienced a devastating home emergency. We left our room to find water pouring from the wall in our upstairs bathroom — and by the time we made it downstairs, it was raining through our living room ceiling.
We quickly turned off the breakers, rushed our kids to my dad’s house, and called the city utilities to shut off the water. It took over an hour for them to arrive, and during that time, we spent every minute bucketing and mopping water out the front door, trying to save what we could.
In the chaos of getting the kids out safely, I slipped on the wet stairs and fell hard. Since then, I’ve been in extreme pain and haven’t been able to work at one of my jobs. The lost wages have made an already difficult situation even harder.
Our homeowners insurance is helping with part of the damage — but not the plumbing that caused it, since it’s considered “wear and tear.” That means we will likely have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket before any of the water damage can even be repaired. They also don’t cover lost income or injury, so we’re stretched beyond thin right now, with our mortgage and regular bills still due.
To make things even slower, our walls tested positive for lead (no asbestos, thankfully), so the house has to be stripped and safely cleaned before the plumber can even start. Movers are coming Monday to take our things into storage while the work begins, but we won’t have access to our belongings in the meantime.
We lost food due to the power being off, and we can’t stay in our home — though our animals are still there and it’s been stressful for them, too. My dad has kindly let us stay with him. The girls are really having a hard time adjusting to the sudden change.
We’re trying to stay positive and take it one step at a time, but this has been overwhelming both emotionally and financially. We truly appreciate any help — big or small — to get through this. Whether it’s sharing this, donating, or even just sending kind words, it all means the world to us.
Thank you for reading and caring. When we’re back home, I promise I’ll make fresh bread for anyone who helped us through this. ❤️
