On Monday morning (Nov. 10), my dad was taken by ICE without warning or explanation at his job. Within 24 hours, he was already in Mexico — a country he hasn’t seen in over 25 years. He was racially profiled and detained without being given the chance to speak. My dad has no criminal record, has always paid his taxes, and has worked tirelessly since he was 7 years old.

He came to the U.S. to build a future for us — and because of his sacrifices, I was able to go to college and become a teacher in the same community where I grew up. Everything I have ever done has been to make my parents’ hard work and sacrifices worth it.

Now, everything has changed. My dad is alone in Mexico, trying to start over after decades of building his life here. He needs help to get on his feet — for essentials like housing, transportation, and a plane ticket to reach a safe place.

Here at home, it’s just me, my mom, and my sister. My mom doesn’t work, and my sister is finishing her CNA program and preparing for her license exam. As a first-year teacher, I am now the only source of income for our household, covering rent, bills, and supporting my family emotionally through this devastating time.
