Hey guys I know it's been a few weeks since my last update... Things have just been crazy and we have just been trying to process and be a family and make memories. We did see a neurosurgeon, the same one that operated on Donny last time. He said he could do the surgery but he would hit his ventricle... That means that when that happens the cancer would spread to the rest of his brain! We decided to wait on surgery because there is a new trial that our former oncologist found for us at MD Anderson in Houston. It's immunotherapy combined with a different chemo than what he hasn't already had. Immunotherapy is the holy grail of cancer! This trial is very promising because they finally found a chemo/immunotherapy combination that is successful together! One of the requirements of the trial is that there is measurable disease. So, if we had surgery now the surgeon would have to leave some of the tumor and with the risks involved this time. This is another reason we opted to wait on surgery. Not to mention he would have to wait 2+ months after surgery, for healing, to start the trial because immunotherapy would halt all healing. The issue we are having right now is we are having to go to MD Anderson as cash pay/self pay patients because MD Anderson is not in our insurance's network! I am currently fighting with insurance to get an out of network referral but this can take time... Time we don't have to sit around and wait due to the rapid growth of his cancer. We have also asked for financial aid through MD Anderson but they do not offer it to patients that have insurance, even if the insurance you have isn't accepted.... With all of this being said we are asking for help with not only medical costs but travel back and forth and possibly even lodging at times. Every little bit helps! We hate having to ask but we are out of options. The next thing after initial visit {which was generously covered) is pathology and that cost is upwards of $2000.
