I don’t usually ask for help, but our family is going through a really difficult season and could use some support.

Over a year ago, my dad suffered a sudden brainstem stroke—the most severe kind. The first stroke was caught in time, and he initially came through it well. He was then sedated overnight, and during that time he suffered a second stroke that went undetected for an unknown amount of time. It’s truly a miracle he is still alive.

Before this, he was strong, healthy, and independent. Now he lives with locked-in syndrome. He can’t speak, move, or even do something as simple as scratch his own nose.

I left my job last year to care for him full time, and recently my mom was let go from hers. She had been carrying his insurance, so we’re now in a place of real uncertainty while she searches for new work and coverage.

His care is constant and extensive. Even with me supporting him full time and my mom helping where she can, his needs are so significant that it’s truly the work of three people. It’s been an incredibly exhausting year for all of us.

On top of that, my dad used to take care of so much—our home, the yard, and even working to fix up our previous house to sell. Those responsibilities of course didn’t go away, and with the time and cost his care requires, we are stretched very thin. Even basic household tasks have become challenging to keep up with, and many everyday things have been pushed aside for months. We’ve always been a hardworking family, so when I say we’re stretched thin on time and capacity, it’s probably an understatement!

We have been blessed by God richly throughout, but it’s still a lot to carry alone. We are doing everything we can to survive one day at a time.
