On January 24th, my kids, Miles and Mia, Max, and I came home from spending time with my parents to find 3–4 inches of water covering our entire first floor. The flooding caused severe damage, and initial repairs were made.
After the first round of repairs, we were pressured to move back in. I asked why the walls hadn’t been opened to check for moisture and was assured it wasn’t necessary and that everything had been done properly and was safe. Not trusting these assurances, I hired an independent inspector out of pocket for $258. That inspection revealed that most of the first floor had to have walls removed due to significant moisture inside them, confirming that the first repairs were insufficient.
Management refuses to cover a second inspection ($258), claiming the work has been done “up to standards”—exactly what I was told after the first repairs. On top of that, we have a $500 deductible on our renters insurance before we can replace damaged items. Altogether, I am looking at over $1,000 out of pocket before insurance covers anything.
We’ve also had extra expenses for meals while displaced, since we cannot use our kitchen. Even with support from family and friends, the financial and emotional strain is overwhelming.
I’m working full-time, going to school, and trying to manage all of this while caring for Miles and Mia when they are with me. We hate asking for help, but we cannot cover these unexpected costs alone.
Any contribution—big or small—will go directly toward inspections, replacing lost items, repairs, and meals while displaced. Even sharing this campaign would mean the world to us.
Thank you for helping us get through this incredibly difficult time.
