Our dear friend Jackie Martins has lived in Melbourne, Australia as an international student since 2012. She is originally from Brazil and her parents, two brothers and a sister are still living there. On Friday morning 11th January she received some very sudden and tragic news to inform her that her brother, aged just 34, had a heart attack and passed away.
As her closest friends we created a fund to try and assist her with travelling back to Brazil so that she was able to be there to provide support to her family at this very sad time. As we know, travelling to Brazil isn’t cheap and especially not so at this time of the year and with zero notice!
Additionally, life as an international student in Australia can be tough. Jackie has worked tirelessly in Australia since living here to be able to afford her university fees, rent and general living expenses. At this stage she is home in Brazil for the next few weeks whilst she is still on University holidays but this will mean she will lose time working here in Melbourne before she commences her final year of her Bachelor degree at Swinburne. Time away from work and life in Melbourne will mean that it will be a struggle for Jackie to pay her rent, bills and University fees upon her return therefore anything people can contribute to help with easing the stress on her and her family at this very difficult time would be most appreciated. No amount is too small, and we thank you in advance for your generosity given the tragic circumstances.
Thanks in advance to all.
