“I mean you’ve got to be a midwife, a vet, an agronomist, a fortune teller, a businessman, a gambler, an entrepreneur, a mechanic. You have to be so many things to be a farmer and I’m none of those.
...
I mean of all the things you need to be a farmer, I have none of them. But I still want to do it.” - Jeremy Clarkson
To want to do it you have to love it. Not just with your heart but with your entire being because some days it’s easy to remember why you love it and other days farming will break your heart. The love has to be stronger than the heartbreak, especially on a dairy because it’s 365 days of ups and downs.
We took some hard hits this week but none so much as losing our free stall barn to the storms that hit the Lowcountry this week. Thankfully, no cows were hurt and we didn’t lose as much as others but this is a major blow to the farm.
This barn is where the calves who have recently calved are held. They’re the first group milked so that we can collect the colostrum. It’s also closer to the parlor so that we can keep an eye on them to make sure they’re healthy.
Cow comfort is a top priority for a dairy and losing this barn has affected that immensely. A build like this is a big project and we can't do it alone. This won't cover the project but it at least gets us started. Every little bit can help make the difference for us.
Thank you, from all of us at Lowcountry Creamery
