Help our cousin recover from acute Pancreatitis

Donation protected
Hi there,

My name is Wensi and I’m starting a fundraiser to help our cousin Zeliang Quan, who has been in intensive care with severe pancreatitis since September. This is a last resort effort to help the Quan family who are now facing financial ruin due to massive medical bills and save our cousin.

What happened?

Zeliang (or Ze as we love to call him), was on a work assignment in a remote, north western region of China called Qinghai, when he began to feel abdominal pain and general discomfort. He initially thought it was food poisoning, but his symptoms gradually became more severe. On 07/09/2021, he was admitted to local hospital with a severe case of acute Pancreatitis and soon taken to the ICU.

Due to the lack of facilities in such a remote location and the severity of Ze’s symptoms, the hospital staff could only keep him alive by performing multiple surgeries due to organ failure. Unfortunately, Ze also couldn’t be transferred to a larger hospital in another city as he was in a critical condition. There were many close calls and we almost lost Ze a few times.

Luckily, Ze proved to be a fighter and lived through every emergency surgery, which the doctors gave him single digit chances of surviving. Ze’s father Xuntao and a few relatives flew to Xining to look after him and provide financial support. Uncle Xuntao has been by his son’s side since September and is the reason Ze is still with us today. There were times when doctors thought Ze wouldn’t survive another surgery, but his father insisted they try and in the end, Ze finally became stable enough to be transferred. On the 1st December, Ze was relocated to the Nanjing General Hospital, in the large city of Nanjing.

Financial Ruin
This brings renewed hope for Ze to recover, however the previous months of continual ICU costs and emergency surgeries has incurred a massive cost of about $400,000AUD. Even with the help from family and friends, Uncle Xuantao has essentially used up all of his life savings and is now in serious debt. Although Ze’s father has shown such strength throughout this gut wrenching experience, the mounting financial strain has is now making him helpless as he is a man in his 60s with a single source of income.

Invoices of medical bills

The ongoing costs at the new hospital have been estimated at $111,000AUD for the first stage so it is becoming extremely hard to come up with funds, even with family and friends helping.

A family that has already lost so much
I want to tell a story of Ze’s past, which was filled with tragedy, but also full of hope due to a father’s love. Ze came from a wonderful family with loving parents until tragedy struck when he was only six years old. A home invasion/robbery resulted in Ze’s mum being brutally murdered in front his own eyes. He would have suffered the same fate, if not for his selflessly brave mother who shielded him from the killer and shoved him out of their apartment and escape. This devastated Ze’s father and traumatised Ze for many years, growing up without a mother’s love.

In the following years, his father worked hard to provide for his son, and eventually, Ze graduated from university and worked in a job very similar to his mother. When Ze was hospitalised, we all tried to comfort his father, but one day told us we couldn’t even imagine his pain, now that his son could die doing the same job as his mother and not even starting a family of his own. Hope that his son would come out of this alive was the only thing Uncle Xuantao had left. His willingness to sacrifice everything and the undying love for his son is why Ze is still with us today.

What you can do to help the Quan family
We are asking for $50,000 to help Ze’s father pay for upcoming hospital costs. Uncle Xuantao is a proud man and was initially hesitant of asking strangers for help, but know he has exhausted all possibilities and is in a desperate situation. All funds received will be transferred to the account of Ze’s father Xuantao Quan. We will provide regular updates on Ze’s condition and happy to answer any questions you have.
