Chemo for our Corgi Gunther

TLDR* Hello! My loving three-year-old Corgi, Gunther, was just diagnosed with cancer (Lymphoma) and is only expected to live 4-8 weeks. Unless we can cough up an extra 8000 dollars for his treatment, he might not have a chance to live. If you can help, please help our family. If you can’t, please share! TLDR: (Too long didn’t read*)

Hello, my name is Alysa and this is our sweet baby boy, Gunther. Gunther is a three-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We got Gunther back in Italy where my husband, Chris, was stationed. When we first moved to Italy, I had a hard time adjusting to the new culture, especially with the language barrier since I really don’t know that much Italian. I was also having some issues with my husband’s non conventional work hours. After some time, he suggested that it may be beneficial for us to get a dog. My heart was set on getting a corgi and I showed several videos and photos to my husband, he finally caved in. We, then, started our search for corgi breeders. Never in a million years did we think we’d get so so lucky to get a pup like Gunther. He was not only my first friend in Italy, but he was one of the few factors that had got me threw my husbands deployment in Afghanistan. He is selfless, so full of sass (so much so that it’s unbelievable), and so full of unconditional love.

On January 13, 2021 at 7am, I was petting gunther and happened to feel some bumps under his chin. I immediately called my husband to tell him. He said that he wanted me to speak his mother to ask for advice on what it could be. She said it sounded like his lymph nodes. He was swollen behind his legs and under his armpits as well. We thought it could be an infection so my husband called our vets office to ask for some antibiotics. With covid, getting in for an appointment could take weeks and we just wanted to help Gunther as soon as possible. The vet offered to stay late to take a look at Gunther and run certain tests to see what was actually going on. He wasn’t certain on what it could be and felt the need to send it off to a specialist. There they would take a look at the samples to really see what was going on for sure before any treatment was given to him. He said he’d get results back by the 16th which seemed so long to us and by the 15th I decided to call the office to see if any results came back. Another vet technician that worked with our vet happened to be in and spoke to my husband and me. She said the results came back and unfortunately…it wasn’t good news.

Lymphoma.

Our hearts immediately dropped. I felt so much pain in my chest and couldn’t stop shaking. My husband and I are having a hard time wrapping our heads around how we all went to bed totally fine and the next day he has a projected 4 to 8 weeks to live. We never expected to hear that our overall healthy pup (that’s only 3 years old!) has cancer. If that wasn’t enough, there were very few options for treatment, and even fewer options that projected him lasting for more than just a few more weeks.

Gunther isn’t just our first dog, he’s the first extension of our family. But our family doesn’t stop with him. Gunther showed us that we could not only be good owners, but we can be good parents as well.  He also made it very apparent that he was ready to take on the big role of being an older brother.  Right now, we are 7 months pregnant with a little boy who we thought would be drowning in corgi fur.  Never did we think that there was a chance that our healthy, little pup may not be the big brother we knew he could be. He has always been there for us no matter what and we feel that we need to do the same for him. He is still so young with so much life left to live and we want to give it our best shot to give it to him.

Anybody who has or is starting a family knows how tight money can be, and with an unfortunate event like this its hard to find an extra three to eight thousand dollars for treatment in such a short amount of time. We understand that not everybody has extra money floating around (and if you are financially unstable in any way please do not feel obligated to put yourself in a worse position) but please think about donating if you’d like to help. Any amount helps, big or small and if you can’t afford to donate but want to help, please share this to give it as much exposure as possible and pray for our family.

Thank you to everybody who reads this. Even with facing something as menacing as cancer, Gunther continues to have his derpy facial expressions when trudging through this. Given his short legs, we can still help Gunther kick cancers ass. Let’s see what cancer has to say when faced with this crazy loaf of bread.
