Standing with Officer Nichols: A Hero's Fight Against ALS

"I’ve spent my life serving others; now I’m fighting to stay for my kids."

In 2023, Mark stood proudly with the Columbus Police Academy’s 141st class, ready to protect and serve. A Newark Catholic Hall of Famer (Class of '08) and an Ohio Dominican Alum ('12), Mark has always been defined by his strength, his heart, and his dedication to his faith, his family, his teammates, and the Reynoldsburg community. Whether he was on patrol or helping neighbors at the local food bank, Mark was the one people leaned on.

The Quiet Shift:
The decline started subtly in April 2025. By July, a persistent "foot drop" began to hinder his stride. By September, the physical strength Mark relied on for his job began to fail him; spasticity led to falls, and the man who once patrolled our streets began needing a cane, then a walker.

The reality he faces is devastating:
On January 8th, 2026, Mark and his family received the news no one is prepared for: a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

He is seeing a specialist at the Ohio State University every 3 months. They are tracking his progression by breathing tests.

ALS is a disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to move, speak, and eventually, to breathe and die from suffocation. But if you know Mark, you know he isn't a man who waits for the end. He is a man who fights for the beginning of a cure.

Because there is currently no approved cure in the U.S., Mark is looking beyond our borders. He is tirelessly researching experimental trials overseas—breakthrough treatments that represent a lifeline.

The Mission: More Time, More Memories

ALS is a relentless thief, but it hasn't stolen Mark’s spirit. At 35, Mark’s primary focus isn't himself—it's his three children (ages 7 to 16). He wants to be there to see them walk across the graduation stage, to be there for their weddings, and to remain the pillar of their lives for as long as possible.

While the typical prognosis for ALS is 2-4 years, Mark is looking at the horizon. He is researching specialists across the globe, specifically looking toward cutting-edge treatments in Europe that offer hope for prolonging his life.

Why We Need Your Help

Mark is a man of service, and asking for help doesn't come naturally to him. However, the path to life-extending treatment is steep:

Mark’s research into overseas trials is a common path for those looking for "breakthrough" interventions not yet fully approved in the States.

RNA-Based Gene Therapy (Israel): In late 2025, researchers in Israel announced a world-first using a specific RNA molecule (microRNA-126) that not only stopped nerve degeneration in models but showed signs of regeneration. This targets the TDP-43 protein, which is found in over 90% of all ALS cases.

Stem Cell Therapy (Global): Various centers in Europe and Asia are testing Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs). The goal here isn't just to replace dead neurons, but to create a "neuroprotective" environment that shields healthy nerves from dying.

Pridopidine (Phase 3): A major global trial (PREVAiLS) is currently recruiting. It focuses on the Sigma-1 receptor to protect the "communication" between the brain and muscles.

The Mission: We are raising funds to get Mark access to experimental clinical trials currently taking place overseas. While the U.S. medical system provides incredible support, ALS moves fast—and we need to move faster.
Travel Costs: Funding for Mark to meet with world-renowned specialists overseas.

Non-Covered Medical Advancements: Many of the newest ALS treatments are considered "experimental" by insurance and must be paid for out-of-pocket.

Family Security: Ensuring Mark can pursue every possible medical avenue without plunging his children’s future into debt.

How You Can Help

Whether you know him as "Officer Nichols," a teammate from his Newark Catholic days, or a friendly face from the Reynoldsburg Food Bank, you know he would give you the shirt off his back.

Donate: No amount is too small. Every dollar is a "thank you" for his service and a "yes" to more time with his kids.

Share: Please post this link on Facebook, in Police Union groups, and among the Newark/Columbus alumni networks.

Pray & Support: Keep Mark, his children, and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
