Hi, some of you may have been following our progress so far but for those of you that haven't, here is a quick story so far!
On Easter Sunday we found a Blackbird egg on the floor of the woods, no nest in sight, no idea how long it had been there. We decided to give it a chance.
The egg was taken home, placed in a home made incubator which was then replaced with a small £20 one from amazon.
We waited. Six days later we candled the egg, shone a light through the shell, and were surprised to see movement!
14 days after it was found, it hatched!
Since then we have been caring for it, keeping it warm, feeding it and trying to give it the best chance possible.
Now at 20 days old its home is a large cage, purchased from Marketplace.
It has soil and leaf litter in the bottom, worms and woodlice wandering around, Hazel branches to perch on and a small box for hiding in the corner.
We are now getting to the point of needing something bigger and outside if we want to allow the chick....now fledgling, to have any chance of learning how to be a wild bird. It needs room to fly, room to forage and to hear and see wild birds in the big bad world whilst still having the security of a cage....for its safety whilst it learns the ropes of being a grown up bird!
Having already spent nearly £80 on equipment and food I am now hoping for some support from some friends and fans to allow us to purchase a flight pen which will be set up to be as natural an environment outside as possible.
The pen we would prefer is here. The extra monies raised would help us to be able to continue to feed the chick whilst it finds it's feet. Any surplus would be used to purchase squirrel resistant bird boxes for the woods.
Any support is gratefully received. We are glad we have been able to reach the hearts of so many people with the story of our Easter Sunday Egg!
Thanks and love to all our followers and donors.
