Otto and Rosco are only one year old, but they have already endured more than any dog ever should. Before becoming part of our family, they were living in a drug-infested home where they were severely neglected. At one point, they were left completely alone without food or water for more than four days.
When my husband and I learned what was happening, we drove four hours to rescue them before they were taken to the pound and potentially euthanized. When we first brought them home, they were skinny, terrified, and unsure of everything around them.
They didn’t understand that they were finally safe or that they would never have to wonder where their next meal or drink of water would come from again. We have now had Otto and Rosco for about four months, and they have already become such an important part of our family.
As they began settling in and learning what it felt like to be loved, we noticed something concerning about their eyes. At their first full veterinary checkup, we received heartbreaking news: both Otto and Rosco have cataracts in both eyes and are already beginning to lose their sight.
Our veterinarian believes the cataracts may be connected to the severe neglect and malnutrition they suffered during the first year of their lives or potentially an underlying condition such as diabetes. Rosco may have diabetes and will need additional testing to determine exactly what is happening. The hopeful part is that their cataracts are treatable. With testing, specialized care from a veterinary ophthalmologist, and cataract surgery, Otto and Rosco may have the opportunity to see clearly again. However, the testing, surgeries, anesthesia, specialist appointments, and post-operative care for both boys come with an overwhelming cost. After everything they have survived, we cannot accept watching them lose their sight to something that may be treatable. Otto and Rosco have already experienced what it feels like to be abandoned, hungry, scared, and forgotten. We want the rest of their lives to be completely different. We want them to run, play, and explore without fear.
Most importantly, we want them to be able to see the people who love them and fought to give them a second chance. Every donation will go toward their medical testing, cataract surgeries, anesthesia, specialist care, and recovery.
No amount is too small. If you are unable to donate, sharing their story could help it reach someone who can. Thank you for helping us give Otto and Rosco more than just a safe home. You are helping give two incredibly deserving boys the chance to see the beautiful life waiting for them.
