Help Otis communiceren! Help give Otis his voice!

Hallo allemaal,

Dit is Otis, hij is vier jaar en praat niet. Dit komt onder andere door een ultra-zeldzame mutatie in het ASXL2-gen. Daarnaast heeft hij ook de diagnose globale ontwikkelingsstoornis en Autisme.

Papa en mama vinden het al moeilijk dat ze hem niet volledig kunnen begrijpen, maar voor Otis zelf is het natuurlijk nog het lastigste. Zich niet kunnen uitdrukken brengt veel frustratie met zich mee.

Het goede nieuws is dat de specialisten (Logopedisten, medische opvang en WKZ kinderziekenhuis) die Otis helpen, aangeven dat er een hulpmiddel is, namelijk een spraakcomputer. De best passende (bij zijn globale- en taalontwikkeling) is de Vibe10 (hardware) met software Aloha, deze twee gaan hand in hand.

Het slechte nieuws is dat de zorgverzekeraar alleen de software wilt vergoeden, omdat volgens hen een fysieke beperking de enige reden is om de hardware te vergoeden. Een beetje lastig als de software bij deze hardware hoort natuurlijk. Zelf betalen is op dit moment naast alle andere kosten geen optie. En een andere software die “gewoon” op een iPad kan werken sluit niet aan bij Otis beperking, taalbeleving en ontwikkeling.

Dit voelt natuurlijk ontzettend naar. We realiseren ons dat Otis de kans op communicatie nu wordt ontnomen. Het was zijn kans op het hebben van een stem.

via WMO of WLZ krijgen we ook geen hulp, helaas valt Otis volledig tussen wal en schip van de Nederlandse systemen.

Hello everyone

This is Otis. He is four years old and does not speak. The underlying reason for him being non-verbal is an ultra-rare mutation on the ASXL2 gene. He is also diagnosed with a global developmental delay and profound autism. Mom and dad find it difficult that they can not communicate through language with Otis, but for Otis himself it's of course even a bigger challenge. This comes with quite some frustration on his side. It is time that he gets a voice; one way or the other.

The good news is that the specialists (speech therapists, medical daycare and the childrens hospital) who are helping Otis, see a solution by introducing a speech computer to Otis. They think he is ready. The best fit for Otis, given his current stage of global- and speechdevelopment, is the Vibe10 (hardware) with Aloha software. These two are intertwined - one is not useful without the other. The hardware is also specially made for Otis to communicate better in the classroom.

The bad news is that the health insurance is refusing to cover the hardware. According to them he would need a profound physical dissability to get access to the hardware. A little bit of a difficult situation when the software can't run without this hardware of course. The costs for the hardware are too high for the family to cover by themselves. And a simpler software option that can run an iPad does not fit his needs.

Of course, this is quite a horrible feeling; to not be able to give otis his voice. This was his chance to communicate and navigate the world.
